A boat can be the way to adventure, the hope of success, communion with nature at its rawest.
--Carol Lois Haywood

My art exposes the world of Pacific coastal fisheries and the small commercial fishing boat. Here the boats are not romanticized, but their workaday wear-and-tear is lovingly represented. Subjects include crab grabbers, salmon seekers, and related rigs.

I first fell in love with working fishing boats while strolling the docks in Bodega Bay. Painting their many shapes and varieties, I have since learned more about this small-is-beautiful way of life.

Always able to bounce back from past catastrophe, California fishing may still be unable to emerge from the contradictory and confusing tangle of public policy--or so I fear.

The charm of the fishing vessel compares to that of boats of all kinds, which evoke the soul's sojourn through life. The uniqueness of each comes originally as the custom creation of the ship builder. Later additions and repairs only individualize it even more.
NOTES. . .
